The Colorado Freedom Memorial

In the heart of Aurora, Colorado, stands a solemn testament to the courage, sacrifice, and patriotism of the men and women who have served in America's armed forces – the Colorado Freedom Memorial. This iconic monument, the largest of its kind in the United States, pays tribute to the nearly 6,000 Colorado residents who have lost their lives in service to their country since Colorado became a state in 1876. With its striking design, evocative symbolism, and profound sense of reverence, the Colorado Freedom Memorial stands as a powerful reminder of the high cost of freedom and the enduring legacy of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Dedicated on May 26, 2013, the Colorado Freedom Memorial is a labor of love and a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders, Rick Crandall and Bernie Rogoff. Inspired by the desire to honor the memory of Colorado's fallen heroes and provide a place of solace and reflection for their families and loved ones, Crandall and Rogoff embarked on a journey to create a memorial that would serve as a lasting tribute to their sacrifice.

The memorial's design, conceived by artist and sculptor Lisa Hatchadoorian, features 24 steel panels, each etched with the names of Colorado residents who have lost their lives in service to their country. Standing 12 feet tall and stretching over 95 feet in length, the panels create a striking visual representation of the magnitude of the sacrifice made by Colorado's sons and daughters in defense of freedom and democracy.

Set against the backdrop of the majestic Rocky Mountains, the Colorado Freedom Memorial provides a serene and contemplative space where visitors can pay their respects and honor the memory of the fallen. The memorial's location in Springhill Community Park, overlooking the city of Aurora, offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, creating a sense of connection to the natural beauty of Colorado and the vastness of the American West.

Visitors to the memorial are invited to engage in quiet reflection, prayer, or meditation as they walk among the panels, reading the names of the fallen and reflecting on the profound significance of their sacrifice. The memorial's tranquil setting and evocative design inspire a sense of reverence and gratitude, reminding visitors of the debt of gratitude owed to those who have given their lives in service to their country.

In addition to serving as a place of remembrance and reflection, the Colorado Freedom Memorial also plays a vital role in educating future generations about the importance of service, sacrifice, and patriotism. Through educational programs, guided tours, and outreach initiatives, the memorial's staff and volunteers work tirelessly to share the stories of Colorado's fallen heroes and inspire others to honor their memory and carry forward their legacy of service.
